STREET BUBBLES

Did not spend much time on this pic but I upload it here anyway.

CONFERENCE TENT

The view from the conference tent. The tent was transparent plastic, and as the boat sailed by I wanted to get the ‘plastic’ effect without modifying in Photoshop.

The effect can be seen I think, that’s why the pic looks a bit blurry, because it was shot through the plastic wall.

GDANSK CONFERENCE

Been away and still trying to put my things together after the move in my apartment, gud vilken tid det tar!

Trying to make some of the pics from the IHW 2011, 36th Annual International Herpesvirus Workshop  in Gdansk together, the ambition is moderate.

Here is the first:

Central part of Gdansk, near the hotel I lived at: Pica Paca.

Anyway, now I am annoyed once again that I didn’t bring my runningshoes to Gdansk, because now it is REALLY hard to go out, and it is 19:29 and I am feeling sort of heavy, dvs not run light.

TRANSYLVANIAN FIREPLACE

and which he learned how to make when he was young in Transylvania

BESEGGEN

I FOUND ONE MORE PIC OF THE BESEGGEN HIKE IN NORWAY.

DUBAI

Oh, and here I found some Dubai pics from my first visit there. Some skyscrapers of course and the indoor ski slope in the shopping mall ‘Mall of Emirates’.

You know which building this is. This is as close as my (old Pentax) camera got after zoom.

    KAT VAN A

Lovely stroll to Van Gogh’s museum on Wednesday the 10th of November.

    IN THE AIR

There are no bounderies, meaning that I can bring alcohol to whatever country I want?
I don’t understand the reason to prohibiting alcohol travel into EU countries.
Why can I not buy a Vodka Absolut when I go to Holland? Approaching Gothenburg…
Window with frosting by my seat.
    Above Västra Götaland.
    Love the clouds.
    Playing with liquids.
    Reflection from my water glass.
Imagine that the iPhone took all these pics.
OK. That’s a lot of pictures and it kept me occupied as always when my camera (or music) saves me from just staring in the space in front.
    Peace.
    Where are the angels?
    Do you see God?

    BUCHAREST BRASS ON TOUR

In Romania somewhere, don’t remember the town unfortunately.
I do remember though, that the hotel which you see below, gave me a room with bed full of bed bugs, and guess who was bitten real bad?
Noteworthy I had very high fever and was freezing like no one has ever frozen before.
And in this state I was during the whole stay, while playing in the concert as well as when playing dart.
    Brrrrr…
    Katarina tries to aim.
    Mihai tries to aim.
    Tudor tries to aim.
Lipoczi and Catalin play pools instead.
    The members of the tour:
From the left: Mihai (tuba), Tudor (trumpet stand in for Emil), Catalin (trombone) and Lipoczi the original horn player. The horn player from the Spain picture on the earlier post was a stand in for Lipoczi. And Tudor and me was in the same year.

At the concert. The story behind this gig, was a rather funny one. We were told to play some pieces for the manager who was in visit in Bucharest to hear us play. Before the recital, our director invited us for some home made wine, from his own garden. It was DELICIOUS! And we had more than one plastic cup of wine. When it was time to play, we played so well with confidence and awesome!
    We thought.
Instead our teacher told us we made several mistakes, though the wine made us fearless.
Well, we got the gig. =)

    BUCHAREST

Read the New York times add about Bucharest from the link above. Lovely!
Will post more of my own Bucharest pics later, but here are three.

The view from my first apartment in Titan, Bucuresti. I know.

    DIARY OF A TORTURED PHD

Conferences are great. Love to go on conferences.
Especially when the information given is completely new and things never seen before meet the eye.
My life is constantly changing and I hate not knowing what will happen next. I could have prepared better to avoid or change things. As of now, I stumble in the blind’s world not knowing the direction of my clock.
    That is cruel.

    At the bar Teasers.
    Round, round and round.
    Cheers!
    Don’t worry. Be happy.

    RED LIGHT DISTRICT

Souvenirs from Amsterdam. Magnets for the fridge.
Lots of people walking in the District just behind the Krasnapolsky.
I bought a Christmas ball from Amsterdam.
    Not from here.
Maybe I should have bought this, a vibrator that connects to the iPhone.
For the sake of preventing herpes!

    BUCHAREST BRASS QUINTET

This post wants to pay tribute to Bucharest Brass Quintet as we called ourselves. The quintet was started in 1 9 9 5 , and we had the success of radio and TV recordings, tours in Europe and participation in jazz festivals but above all a GREAT joy for playing together. We enjoyed every session of it if I remember correctly, especially the session when we were offered home made wine from our conductor. Sweet.

We were IT. Hot stuff. THE quintet. Alta viata (different life).

So, I’m the second from the left!
The picture was taken in Spain, in 1996 (I just found out from one of the members) during one of the TOURS.

The National University of Music in Bucharest is divided into two faculties: the Faculty of Composition, Musicology and Musical Pedagogy and the Faculty of Performing Arts.
All of the members above were in the Department of Performing Arts and in the year ahead of me. Now they are members of the Orchestra Nationala Radio Bucuresti, professors at the Academy or freelancing in the US with success.

    Me, I’m currently a PhD student…

Iancu Vaduva was my trumpet teacher and Marin-Soare Magharescu was my professor of chamber music (brass quintet for us) and also the professor of trombone. Find the link to the National Academy of Music Bucharest as it is called now, if  you want to have a peak: http://www.unmb.ro/.

I graduated with top grades in 1997, as did all of us. 9.6 out of 10 was my final average grade. I did my last 2 years, year 4 and 5 in one year. Halleluja. Because these grades sent me straight to Long Island University in New York, on an Academic Excellence Award (muchas gracias) so that I could pay my biology studies in NY.

I am so much wiser now.

    TOO MUCH TOKYO SEALINE

Taking the boat trip in Tokyo.

    KYOTO

These pictures were all taken in Kyoto, during our guided tour with Bill.

    TOKYO

i don’t have time to write any text here – but we are still in the ICI2010 Immunology Congress in Japan trip

WAITING FOR THE BUS IN KYOTO

    9/11

Notes found on some wall on Manhattan.
The roses which was sent to me all the way from Norway during this week.
A light procession was initiated going around Brooklyn picking people up, ending up at Brooklyn Heights where we put flowers and sang Amazing Grace, strangers gathered from all around.
    The power of man.

    I REMEMBER 9/11

Just found some old pictures from the States while looking for 9/11 evidence.
This is me in my apartment in the Brooklyn campus at Long Island University.
(Scanning didn’t really succeed – these are paper pictures from an era when I hardly knew how to turn the camera on)
    Some Southampton people.
Blond short hair Anna was my room mate in the house in Southampton.
Kat is getting ready for a weekend out on Manhattan.
    In my campus room.
Begga and me doing homework in Central Park one sunny day.
Not much editing can be made on these pictures.
This one was taken one day in Central Park, where a concert was going on.
Little did I know that 9/11 was upcoming, though
Billy knew that something was going to happen… (amazing).
This picture was taken on Sunday the 16th of Sept after the attack.
The blur on the ‘green’ buidling in the back is the smoke coming from WTC.
This was as far as we were allowed to go, from here we had to turn back.
NYPD out strolling on the street.

WALK IN KYOTO 30th AUG 2010

Oj, oj, oj, these pictures were edited a long time ago in the old iPhoto version, and when I did not neither have nor know Photoshop. But they are a nice memory still from wonderful Japan.
Temple view in Kyoto. The fall is supposed to be awesome there.
This school bus looked so cute with the children wearing uniforms and cute hats.
I told you. Wishes do come true.

On the way to Gion district.

The streets of Kansai region seem old, authentic and mysterious.
    Where did it lead?

H2O shower in the street for everyone. Coolish.

The golden pavilion Kinkakuji again, my favorite picture of it.

    Follow us.

Do you see the happy family on the rock in the middle?
I had once two turtles as pets (I am sorry), they were called Anabella and Grigore.
These guys don’t know what they are called.
    Candy, Sugar and Sweetie maybe.

    TOT IN NARA SUNT

Ultimii poze miscellaneous tot din Nara.
    (am zis bine?)
Make a wish, dreams come true. I know.
Temple concert in the park of Nara.
    Who’s this?
Once upon a time, in a country far, far away…

    DEAR DEER

    NARA 1300th FESTIVAL

NARA 1300TH FEST DANCE PERFORMANCE 2010

This dance performance happily appeared around the corner as I was strolling along in the old city one evening on Sunday the 29th August.

    Event: Nara 1300th Festival 2010.

    NARA RYOKAN

This wonderful and most friendly Ryokan we stayed at in Nara.
Absolutely fabulous, cheap, great hostess, and very comfortable, practical with all the
necessities such as kitchen, laundry, inner court and Japanese-styled calming bedrooms.

    ME TOO IN JAPAN

     Kat was in Kyoto

    and in Tokyo
    Where else?
Oh right, at the Kiyomizu Kannon-do temple in Tokyo, where the childless couples go to sacrifice a doll, which are then burned in a ceremony the 25th of September.
    Inside the temple
I didn’t have a doll to sacrifice so I put a wish at Kiyomizu Kannon-do

    WHICH CITY?

Strolling along in the Kobe night life, I thought it would be a funny thing to collect the typical street lights.
I don’t know now, one could have been enough maybe…

    FROM ALL OVER JAPAN

    Harajuku shopping street
    My Harajuku shopping
    Delicious pickled eggplant
Kyoto statue typical for Japan (?) outside different places on the street
    Tokyo building
Kobe asfalt footprint in the ca 40 degrees Celsius heat
    Fish for sale in Nara
    Another Tokyo building
    Kobe Kitano Bar sign
    What does it say?
Tokyo skyline from the boat trip

    SWEET JAPANESE

Different sweets I found and tasted.
The green tea icecream was not among these unfortunately.
    ICE COFFEE
    JAPANESE PASTA MACHINE? (I WANT)
    SWEET BUNS
SHAVED ICE – SUCH AN AWESOME THING IN THE HEAT =) LOVED IT

    SANNOMIYA TERMINAL HOTEL

Authentic view of single room without breakfast at Sannomiya Terminal hotel.
Before anything in Japan, an electrical outlet converter is a must have, and it was not easy to find. Why didn’t I buy two? I could have sold the other one, here or there.
Sannomiyas Buddha book gave me insight and comfort, if just for 10 min.
Workers outside the Sannomiya Terminal Hotel one evening.
I was so upset I forgot my camera (how could I really) that evening and had to take night shots with my Samsung Jet.
They actually waved at me;  I carefully smiled at them when I saw that THEY saw that I took pictures of them.
    That made my evening.
Also outside the hotel, another guy smiled at me and asked me what I am doing.
I told him I just think that these lamp posts look funny and it would make a cool picture.
He looked at it (and me) and let me be.
I have never seen anything like it anywhere.
    =)
